Another Fugitive Arrested in Ongoing Operation
Police have recaptured another prisoner who escaped from a prison van on Kohat Road in Rawalpindi.
Officials said on Thursday that the total number of arrested fugitives has now reached eight.
The escape happened on June 29 in the Sihala and Chakian area near the Kahuta Road route. The prisoners were being transported from Kahuta to Adiala Jail after court appearances.
A total of 14 under-trial inmates escaped from the prison van. Police launched a major search operation soon after the incident.
Authorities said the latest arrest involved a fugitive wanted in a serious criminal case.
Prisoners Used Chilli Powder During Escape
According to the first information report and police statements, the escape started after prisoners created chaos inside the van.
The inmates allegedly began fighting and shouting during the journey.
When police officers opened the door at a check post, the prisoners reportedly threw red chilli powder into the eyes of the officers.
The attack temporarily blinded the police personnel. The inmates then overpowered the escorts and fled from the vehicle.
Police later sealed nearby areas and set up checkpoints to stop the fugitives from escaping further.
Several teams were deployed to trace the escaped prisoners.
Security Lapses Under Investigation
Police said many of the escaped inmates were facing serious charges.
These charges include murder, attempted murder, and drug trafficking.
The incident raised major concerns over prisoner transport security. Authorities also started an inquiry into possible security lapses.
Earlier reports said four prisoners were recaptured soon after the escape. More arrests were made in the following days.
As of July 2, 2026, police have confirmed that eight of the 14 escaped prisoners are back in custody.
Officials also said Wahab, one of the recaptured suspects named in earlier reports, has been handed over to Islamabad Police in connection with the Sihala case.
Police operations are still underway to arrest the remaining fugitives.
Authorities said search teams are checking possible hideouts and monitoring movement in nearby areas.
The Rawalpindi prison van escape remains a serious security concern for law enforcement agencies. Police say all remaining fugitives will be arrested soon.
