Schools, colleges and universities in Tehsil Rawalpindi to remain closed on August 4
RAWALPINDI: The Deputy Commissioner of Rawalpindi has declared Tuesday, August 4, 2026, a local holiday for all educational institutions within Tehsil Rawalpindi to facilitate security arrangements for the Chehlum procession.
According to an official notification issued on Monday, the holiday will apply to all government and private schools, colleges and universities located within the municipal limits of Tehsil Rawalpindi. However, the order does not apply to educational institutions situated in cantonment areas, which will continue operating under their regular schedules unless separate instructions are issued.
The decision was taken to support administrative and security measures during the religious procession and to ensure the smooth movement of participants while minimizing public inconvenience.
Markets along procession route to remain closed
In addition to the educational holiday, the district administration directed that markets and commercial establishments located on or adjacent to the Chehlum procession route remain closed throughout the event.
Officials said the temporary closure aims to maintain public order, strengthen security arrangements and facilitate the safe passage of mourners participating in the procession.
The notification was issued by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner under powers delegated by the Punjab government’s Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD).
Residents urged to cooperate with authorities
Meanwhile, the district administration advised residents, traders and business owners to make necessary arrangements in advance to avoid inconvenience caused by road restrictions and temporary closures.
Authorities also urged the public to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies and district officials to ensure the peaceful and orderly conduct of the Chehlum procession.
Security personnel and traffic management teams are expected to remain deployed throughout the day to monitor the route, regulate traffic and assist the public. Officials said additional measures would be implemented where necessary to safeguard participants and maintain normal civic order during the religious event.
