The Islamabad district administration opened the Rawal Dam spillways on Tuesday after heavy rainfall pushed the water level above 1,751 feet.
Authorities said the water level reached 1,751.90 feet, prompting the opening of the spillways at around 2pm.
The measure was taken to regulate the rising water inflow and maintain the dam at a safe operating level.
Heavy Rain Raises Water Level
Heavy downpours across Islamabad and surrounding areas increased water inflows into Rawal Dam.
The district administration decided to release excess water through the spillways after the water level reached a critical point.
Officials said the operation would help manage the additional inflow and prevent the water level from rising further.
Relevant departments were directed to implement safety measures before and during the release of water.
Rescue Teams Put on High Alert
The administration directed Punjab Emergency Service Rescue 1122, police and other relevant departments to remain vigilant.
Emergency and civic agencies are coordinating with each other to monitor the situation.
Officials said teams would closely observe water levels and conditions around the dam throughout the spillway operation.
Authorities are also prepared to respond to any emergency resulting from increased water discharge.
Citizens Urged to Avoid Water Channels
The district administration has urged citizens to stay away from streams, drainage channels and low-lying areas while the spillways remain open.
Residents have also been advised to avoid unnecessary visits to areas near watercourses.
Officials warned citizens to follow safety instructions issued by local authorities and remain informed through official updates.
The administration said precautionary arrangements were being made to minimise risks associated with increased water discharge.
