A rare snow leopard has been sighted in the remote Munoor village of Lot Koh Valley in Chitral, creating a wave of excitement among residents and wildlife officials. The elusive predator, known for avoiding human contact, was spotted on Thursday by three villagers, marking one of the most significant wildlife sightings in the region in recent years.
Wildcat Sighting Alarms Residents and Activates Wildlife Teams
According to Munoor village council chairman Shah Abdur Rahim, residents Buzurg Shah and Bahader Shah saw the snow leopard at close range while returning from a mosque. A woman from the village also observed the animal from her home lawn. The wildcat reportedly attacked a corral during the night, killing a goat and leaving part of the carcass behind before disappearing into the highlands.
The sighting prompted immediate action from the wildlife department. Divisional Forest Officer Farooq Nabi arrived in the village with his team to monitor the snow leopardโs movement. He said it was a major development, as such sightings are extremely rare. He noted that the snow leopard had long disappeared from its traditional habitat in Chitralโs Hindukush mountains. Although one was captured earlier this year through camera traps in the Gahiret-Golen conservancy, spotting the animal with the naked eye is considered extraordinary.
Officials assured villagers that they are working to ensure the safety of both the community and the protected species. They will continue monitoring the area to prevent livestock attacks and to track the leopardโs movement.
First Group of Rehabilitated Drug Addicts Returns Home in Chitral
In a separate development, the first batch of 24 rehabilitated drug addicts returned home after receiving treatment at a certified rehabilitation center in Peshawar. The individuals underwent medical care, psychological therapy, social counseling, and vocational training.
Lower Chitral Deputy Commissioner Rao Mohammad Hashim Azim praised the rehabilitation program and highlighted the role of the Save Life Foundation in supporting recovery efforts. He stated that more individuals would be sent for treatment as part of the districtโs mission to create a drug-free Chitral. He emphasized that drug addicts need compassion and steady support, not isolation or criticism.
The initiative aims to reintegrate recovering individuals into society with dignity while helping them build stable, productive lives.
