ISLAMABAD: A rare river dolphin trapped in a fishing net in the Chenab River was rescued today. Local fishermen safely returned the dolphin to the water.
The incident was captured on a mobile phone by a passer-by, and footage of the rescue later circulated widely on social media.
According to local sources, the fishermen were carrying out their routine fishing activities when they discovered the dolphin entangled in their net. After noticing the animal, they carefully worked to free it without causing further harm. The fishermen eventually succeeded in removing the dolphin from the net and released it back into the river.
Sources said the animal weighed more than four maunds and measured approximately six feet in length. The video shows the fishermen removing the dolphin from the net before carrying it toward the river and releasing it into the water.
River dolphins are considered rare aquatic mammals, and experts have stressed the importance of protecting them from hunting and other threats. Hunting such species is prohibited under relevant wildlife protection measures. The fishermen’s decision to rescue and release the dolphin instead of keeping it or causing harm was widely appreciated by people who viewed the footage.
The incident has also renewed calls for greater awareness among fishing communities about the protection of endangered and rare aquatic species.
Wildlife experts and conservation advocates have urged relevant authorities to strengthen monitoring of river ecosystems and promote measures that can reduce accidental entanglement of aquatic animals in fishing nets.
The safe release of the dolphin highlights the role local communities can play in protecting vulnerable wildlife and preserving the country’s river biodiversity.
