Qatar on Tuesday warned that any closure of the Bab al-Mandab waterway could trigger severe global consequences. The warning came after the prolonged blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and recent advances by Houthi forces along the Red Sea coast.
Speaking to reporters, Qatar foreign ministry official Ibrahim Al Hashmi stressed the importance of keeping major maritime routes open. He said the world was already facing economic and trade challenges due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Diplomatic Efforts Intensify Amid Maritime Concerns
Al Hashmi stated that the international community could not afford another strategic waterway closure. He described the potential shutdown of Bab al-Mandab, the southern entrance to the Red Sea, as catastrophic for global trade and stability.
Furthermore, he emphasized that countries were already witnessing the effects of existing disruptions. Therefore, Qatar continues to promote diplomacy and dialogue to prevent further escalation in the region.
The warning comes as tensions remain high across the Middle East. Shipping routes through the Red Sea and surrounding waters play a vital role in global commerce and energy transportation.
Saudi Arabia Issues and Withdraws Security Alerts
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia issued alerts on Tuesday regarding possible attacks in Makkah, Jeddah, and Taif governorate. The warnings followed a series of recent attacks attributed to Iran-backed Houthi forces operating from Yemen.
However, Saudi civil defence authorities quickly lifted the alerts shortly after issuing them. The development marked the first alert issued in Makkah since the start of the ongoing Middle East conflict.
The security measures followed ballistic missile and drone attacks launched from Yemen a day earlier. According to reports, the strikes injured 13 people in southern regions of the kingdom.
Regional tensions continue to raise concerns among governments and international observers. As a result, diplomatic efforts remain focused on preventing further instability and protecting critical trade routes.
