Authorities in Rawalpindi have ordered the detention of Qasim Zaman, a cousin of PTI founder Imran Khan, for 30 days under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) law. The order was issued by the Rawalpindi deputy commissioner following recommendations from law enforcement and intelligence authorities.
The development came after Qasim Zaman was reportedly taken into custody near Adiala Jail, where he had arrived to meet Imran Khan on a scheduled family visitation day. PTI leaders strongly criticized the move and called for his immediate release.
Authorities Cite Public Order Concerns
According to the detention order, police alleged that Qasim Zaman was involved in organizing gatherings and activities that authorities believed could pose a threat to public order. The Rawalpindi District Intelligence Committee reviewed the matter and unanimously recommended preventive detention.
Officials subsequently directed that Zaman remain in custody for 30 days under the MPO framework. The order stated that he would remain under the supervision of the superintendent of Central Jail Rawalpindi during the detention period.
PTI Condemns the Detention
PTI leaders rejected the allegations and described Qasim Zaman as a non-political individual. Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said the detention was unjustified and expressed concern over the continued arrests of people associated with the PTI founder’s family.
The detention comes amid heightened political tensions and extensive security measures linked to PTI’s ongoing protest movement demanding Imran Khan’s release. Authorities have intensified preventive actions in recent weeks, citing concerns about law and order during planned demonstrations.
Qasim Zaman has the right to appeal the detention order before the Punjab Home Department. Meanwhile, the case has added to the broader political debate surrounding preventive detentions and security measures ahead of PTI-led protests.
