Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party secured a large majority in Russia’s parliamentary elections. The preliminary results of elections revealed today the victory of Putin’s party.
The election covered all seats in the lower-house State Duma and marked the first parliamentary vote since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Authorities also held voting in Ukrainian territories that Russia occupies and claims to have annexed.
United Russia leads vote
With more than 71% of ballots counted, United Russia had secured 57.5% of the vote, according to Russian news agencies. The Communist Party followed with 14%, while the LDPR nationalist party received 8.7%, according to preliminary figures. State agency TASS projected that United Russia would retain its two-thirds majority in the 450-member State Duma. That majority would allow the ruling party to amend Russia’s constitution without support from other parties. No major anti-war party participated in the election after Russia’s Supreme Court removed the Yabloko party from the ballot.
Meanwhile, the election faced disruptions as Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack on Moscow and surrounding areas during the final voting day.
Drone strikes disrupt final voting day
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Ukraine launched around 1,600 drones, including about 450 targeting Moscow. Russian officials reported two deaths and fires following the attacks, including one at an oil refinery. A drone strike also hit a 21-storey residential building, forcing authorities to evacuate around 400 people. Russia’s Defence Ministry accused Ukraine of attempting to disrupt the election and vowed to intensify strikes against military targets in Kyiv.
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the strikes and said Ukraine’s long-range attacks had significantly affected the Moscow region. The latest escalation comes as diplomatic efforts continue alongside intensified attacks by both sides.
