The Punjab government has increased annual tuition fees at public medical and dental colleges from Rs15,000 to Rs50,000 for the 2026–27 academic session. The revision represents an increase of more than 233%, raising concerns about affordability for students from low-income families.
The revised fee applies to students seeking admission to government medical and dental institutions across the province. The increase comes as thousands of candidates compete for limited seats in public-sector colleges.
Annual Tuition Fee Rises to Rs50,000
Under the revised policy, students will pay Rs50,000 annually in tuition fees, compared with the previous charge of Rs15,000. The change adds Rs35,000 to the annual cost of studying medicine or dentistry at public institutions.
The higher fee may create additional pressure on families already managing rising education and living expenses. Students who secure admission on merit could face difficulties meeting the increased costs.
Medical Education Costs Remain a Concern
Medical education in Pakistan remains highly competitive because public-sector colleges offer comparatively affordable study options. Limited seats also push some students towards private institutions, where fees can be substantially higher.
The latest increase has renewed debate about access to medical education and financial support for deserving students. Parents and students have urged the provincial government to reconsider the decision and protect opportunities for candidates from lower-income households.
New Admission Policy Covers 2026–27 Session
The University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore, will oversee centralised admissions to government and private medical and dental colleges in Punjab for the 2026–27 session.
Under the admission policy, candidates must pass the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) and meet the prescribed academic eligibility criteria. The policy also sets out the process for college preferences and online applications.
Students should consult the official UHS admission policy and their chosen college for confirmed tuition charges and additional expenses. The final financial burden may also include admission, examination and other institutional fees.
