The Punjab government has approved a new traffic license points system aimed at improving road safety and holding habitual violators accountable. The system introduces stricter penalties for repeat offenses and is modeled after international traffic management practices seen in cities like Dubai.
Under the new framework, each traffic violation will lead to a deduction of between two and four points from a driverโs license. Accumulating 20 points within a year will result in license suspension, which may last from two months to one year depending on the seriousness and frequency of the violations.
Traffic officials said the move is part of the governmentโs broader strategy to modernize road management and reduce traffic accidents across Punjab.
Offenses such as overspeeding and signal jumping will each incur a deduction of four points, in addition to the existing monetary fines. This dual-penalty approachโcombining financial and administrative consequencesโis expected to serve as a strong deterrent against reckless driving.
Officials added that the point-based system will create a digital record of driving behavior, allowing traffic authorities to monitor repeat offenders more effectively. The initiative aligns with Punjabโs ongoing efforts to implement a smart, technology-driven traffic monitoring system similar to those operating in major global cities.
The updated traffic regulations are part of a wider campaign that also includes an increase in traffic fines and stricter enforcement of road safety laws. Authorities hope the new system will encourage responsible driving habits, reduce road accidents, and ensure smoother traffic flow across the province.
By linking penalties directly to driver behavior, the Punjab government aims to instill a culture of accountability on the roads, with the ultimate goal of making the provinceโs highways and city streets safer for all road users.
