Punjab has approved a new smart waste management system that will introduce global recycling standards to schools across the province. The initiative, backed by the provincial leadership, aims to improve cleanliness, promote eco-friendly practices, and encourage waste segregation at an early age.
Smart Waste System for Schools
In the first phase, the “Smart Waste Management Process” will be introduced in both public and private educational institutions. Schools will be provided with five different colored bins, each designated for a specific type of waste. The goal is to reduce overall waste through recycling while instilling environmentally responsible habits among students.
The deadline for installing the bins has been set for September 30. From October 1, inspections will begin to ensure compliance. Institutions that fail to meet the requirements will face financial penalties.
Oversight and Implementation
The project will be supervised by the provincial environment ministry. The Education Minister and the Local Government Minister have been given defined targets to ensure the timely rollout of the system. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a formal notification detailing the color-coded bin categories.
Color-Coded Bins for Waste Segregation
The bins will be used as follows:
-
Yellow bins: Paper and cardboard
-
Green bins: Bottles, glass pieces, and laboratory waste
-
Grey bins: Fruit peels, leftover food, leaves, and vegetables
-
Red bins: Metal waste
-
Orange bins: Plastic waste
Through this segregation process, recyclable materials will be collected and repurposed, helping to reduce the burden on landfills.
Support and Monitoring
The Local Government and Community Development Department will handle the distribution of bins to schools. Meanwhile, the EPA will carry out inspections, enforce compliance, and ensure that institutions follow the waste management standards. Schools that successfully adopt the system will be awarded official certificates of recognition.
Additionally, a helpline (1139) has been set up under the Punjab Management Service. Schools can use the helpline to request waste collection services or seek guidance on implementation.
Encouraging Sustainability Among Students
The introduction of the five-bin waste system is expected to raise awareness among students about recycling and environmental conservation. By involving children in waste segregation, the government hopes to instill sustainable habits that will carry into adulthood.
This initiative represents a significant step toward aligning provincial waste management policies with international standards. If successful, it may serve as a model for extending similar eco-friendly systems to other institutions and communities across Punjab.
