Election Commission announces month-long window for long-awaited Punjab local polls following meeting on electoral preparations
ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced that local government elections in Punjab will take place between December 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027, setting a timeframe for the province’s much-awaited grassroots electoral exercise.
The commission announced the schedule window following a meeting convened to discuss preparations for holding local government elections across Punjab.
According to the declaration, the electoral process will be conducted during the one-month period beginning December 15 and ending January 15.
The announcement marks an important step toward restoring elected representation at the municipal and local levels across Pakistan’s most populous province.
ECP Moves Ahead With Punjab Poll Preparations
The commission has been examining administrative and electoral arrangements required to conduct the province-wide exercise.
Consequently, the latest announcement provides political parties, prospective candidates and election authorities with a clearer timeframe to prepare for the polls.
Local government elections involve extensive logistical arrangements because voting must take place across numerous districts, cities and local administrative units.
Therefore, election authorities will need to coordinate polling arrangements, election staff, security measures and other administrative requirements before voting begins.
Further details regarding individual election stages and polling arrangements are expected as the commission advances preparations.
Local Elections Set to Restore Grassroots Representation
Meanwhile, the announcement places renewed focus on local governance in Punjab, where elected representatives play an important role in addressing municipal and community-level issues.
Local governments typically handle or influence services ranging from sanitation and infrastructure to neighbourhood development and other civic responsibilities under the applicable provincial framework.
Political parties are also expected to accelerate preparations following the ECP’s announcement, including candidate selection and local campaigning.
Furthermore, election authorities will have to ensure that the process complies with the relevant legal and electoral requirements across Punjab.
The commission’s declaration establishes the December 15-January 15 window, although detailed polling dates and constituency-level arrangements will require further official notifications.
The ECP is expected to issue additional instructions as preparations progress toward the province-wide local government elections.
