Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced an extensive law and order strategy to curb extremism and restore peace in the province. The plan was finalized during her third consecutive high-level meeting on the issue, reflecting the government’s resolve to strengthen governance and ensure public safety.
The meeting resulted in a series of decisive actions, including tougher implementation of existing laws, community-level monitoring, and rapid-response systems to track extremist activities and illegal operations.
Strict Enforcement of Loudspeaker Act and Monitoring Cells
A key feature of the new policy is the strict enforcement of the Loudspeaker Act to prevent hate speech and inflammatory content during public gatherings. To enhance oversight, whistleblower cells will be established in every district to report violations and extremist propaganda.
Additionally, a dedicated unit within Helpline 15 has been created to register complaints about extremist groups and foreign nationals residing in Punjab without legal documentation. This measure aims to strengthen intelligence collection and improve inter-agency coordination against threats to internal security.
Ban on Extremist Promotion and Social Media Monitoring
The Punjab government has also imposed a comprehensive ban on advertisements, posters, and placards promoting extremist organisations. Those found distributing hate material online will face prosecution under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).
Officials stressed that strict monitoring of digital platforms will help identify individuals spreading hate speech or promoting violence. This move is part of a broader digital governance effort to maintain law and order in an era of online radicalisation.
Legal Action Against Illegal Gatherings
Individuals involved in organising unauthorised gatherings or disrupting business activity by shutting down markets will be prosecuted under anti-terrorism laws. These measures are designed to ensure that public life, commerce, and education continue without disruptions caused by unlawful demonstrations or extremist activities.
The chief minister reaffirmed that maintaining peace and enforcing the rule of law are top priorities for the provincial administration.
Record Youth Employment Under Hunarmand Programme
During a separate review meeting, Maryam Nawaz was briefed on the achievements of the Hunarmand Programme — Punjab’s flagship skill development initiative. Over 180,000 young people have been trained in technical and vocational disciplines within a few months, marking a provincial record.
Among them, more than 75,000 trained individuals have already secured employment in different sectors. Additionally, 450 transgender persons have been provided stable job opportunities, reflecting the government’s focus on inclusivity and empowerment.
Commitment to International Cooperation and Progress
The chief minister also extended congratulations to Japan’s newly elected Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, recognising her as Japan’s first female leader. Maryam Nawaz conveyed her best wishes for Takaichi’s success, highlighting Punjab’s openness to global collaboration and progress.
