Traffic authorities in Punjab have intensified efforts to curb underage driving, reporting a significant increase in enforcement actions this year. According to officials, the number of interventions has risen by 62% compared to last year, reflecting the growing concern over minors operating vehicles on public roads.
Last year, 296,000 underage drivers were fined across Lahore and other districts of Punjab, while this year the figure has surged to 480,000, highlighting the scale of the issue.
Traffic police officials emphasize that reckless driving by underage motorists is a major contributor to road accidents in the province. Many of these young drivers lack proper training and experience, increasing the likelihood of collisions and endangering both themselves and other road users.
Authorities warn that the problem has become widespread, prompting a more stringent enforcement approach to discourage minors from driving illegally.
In addition to issuing fines, traffic authorities are registering formal cases against underage drivers. To ensure accountability, surety bonds are being taken from parents, obligating them to supervise their children and prevent future violations. This measure aims to directly involve guardians in discouraging underage driving, thereby reinforcing both legal and social responsibility.
The crackdown forms part of a broader road safety strategy in Punjab, which seeks to reduce accidents and improve traffic discipline across urban and rural areas.
Traffic police officials urge parents and communities to educate young people about the risks associated with driving before reaching the legal age. They also encourage adherence to traffic laws, stressing that these measures are intended to protect lives and promote a culture of responsible driving.
Authorities have indicated that enforcement will continue throughout the year, with ongoing monitoring of high-risk areas and repeat offenders. The intensified crackdown signals the governmentโs commitment to tackling underage driving and ensuring safer roads for all residents of Punjab.
