The Punjab Wildlife and Parks Department has introduced portable X-ray services for captive wild animals. The initiative aims to improve diagnosis and treatment across wildlife facilities.
The advanced diagnostic service operates through the Wildlife Hospital at Lahore Safari Zoo. Recently, veterinarians used the equipment to examine a fallow deer and a python at Lahore Zoo.
Officials carried out the procedures under Lahore Zoo Director Ghulam Rasool’s guidance. Deputy Director Shahzaib Khurshid supervised the diagnostic examinations.
Previously, veterinarians transported immobilised animals to external veterinary facilities for radiography. However, the lengthy process increased handling, transportation stress, and health risks.
Portable Technology Improves Animal Healthcare
The portable digital X-ray system allows veterinarians to conduct examinations on-site. Consequently, animals no longer require unnecessary transportation for routine diagnostic imaging.
Officials said the technology significantly reduces stress during medical procedures. Moreover, it enables veterinarians to make faster and more accurate clinical decisions.
Early diagnosis remains essential in wildlife medicine for successful treatment. Therefore, the portable system supports quicker intervention and improved recovery outcomes.
Department Strengthens Wildlife Medical Services
The Punjab Wildlife and Parks Department described the initiative as a major advancement. Officials said the service aligns wildlife healthcare with international standards.
