Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched five major road projects under the public-private partnership (PPP) model, handing their management and operations to private contractors. The initiative covers 318 kilometres of roads and is expected to generate Rs. 22 billion in revenue for the provincial government.
The projects include Muridke-Narowal Road, Shakargarh-Narowal Road, Faisalabad Ring Road, Faisalabad-Sahianwala Road, and Faisalabad-Samundri-Rajana Road. Under the arrangement, private operators will manage toll collection and road maintenance for seven years.
Electronic Toll System Planned
The Punjab government will establish modern electronic toll plazas on the selected roads. Moreover, private contractors will collect tolls through a system linked with the National Highway Authority while maintaining, repairing, and rehabilitating the roads.
Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb briefed the chief minister about the projects and the broader PPP programme. She said the government had reduced the processing time for PPP projects from two years to six months to speed up implementation.
Four More Roads Set for PPP Model
The government also plans to transfer four additional roads to private operators under the PPP framework. These include Bahawalpur-Yazman, Yazman-Ahmadpur East, Raiwind-Changa Manga, and Gajjumata-Kasur roads.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Public-Private Partnership Authority is developing projects across several sectors, including healthcare, sanitation, tourism, education, waste management, and transport. The initiative also includes plans for a modern truck terminal in Faisalabad and other infrastructure projects.
The government expects the private-sector model to improve road management while creating a new revenue stream for Punjab. Furthermore, officials said the PPP programme would expand to additional public services and infrastructure projects across the province.
