The Punjab Minister for School and Higher Education, Rana Sikandar Hayat, stated that these holidays could start from May 22 and could last till August 2.
Talking to the media on Saturday, the minister added that an official decision would be made by the government regarding this matter after May 11 following the review of the situation by the concerned department. In addition to this, the government also intends to organise summer camps during these holidays.
The decision is being taken amid reports from the meteorological department about the extreme climatic conditions prevailing in the province. Earlier, the Punjab Disaster Management Authority had informed the concerned departments about high temperatures and rainfall in Punjab till July.
According to the officials, plain regions of Punjab are more susceptible to the worst heat in the month of May. Thus, the Punjab government is assessing some precautionary measures to safeguard the students and teachers from harsh weather conditions.
The parents and teachers are also worried regarding the high temperature in the classrooms in schools that lack effective cooling mechanisms. For this reason, many people are backing the idea of early vacations to secure their kids from the worst summer heat.
Last year, the Punjab government declared summer vacations from May 28 to August 14. However, they later extended the vacation period till August 31 owing to harsh weather conditions prevailing across the province.
It is anticipated that the Punjab government will finalize its schedule for this year in the coming few days as the temperature keeps on rising across Punjab.
