The Punjab government has approved a ban on faulty and smoky vehicles entering Lahore as part of efforts to control pollution and improve air quality.
The decision follows directives from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and was taken during a meeting chaired by Senior Punjab Minister Maryam Aurangzeb in Lahore. Officials reviewed several measures aimed at reducing emissions and improving traffic management across the city.
Traffic Police Ordered To Enforce Rules
Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Traffic Mohammad Waqas Nazir directed officials to remove beggars from road crossings and major intersections across Lahore. He also instructed District Traffic Officers (DTOs) to adopt a comprehensive strategy to ensure strict compliance with traffic rules.
Furthermore, the DIG ordered action against vehicles involved in overloading. Authorities will also target vehicles carrying sand and concrete without proper covering, while officials have been asked to prepare lists of individuals who avoid paying traffic challans.
The measures are intended to improve road discipline while addressing activities that can contribute to traffic congestion and pollution.
Ferozepur Road To Get Major Upgrade
Nazir also directed officials to bring Ferozepur Road up to the standards of The Mall Road and Canal Road. Traffic authorities will focus on improving enforcement and maintaining smoother traffic flow along the major route.
In addition, officials were instructed to stop vehicles carrying excessive quantities of sugarcane from entering the city. The measure aims to prevent overloaded transport vehicles from creating safety risks and disrupting traffic.
All traffic officials have been directed to ensure implementation of the instructions outlined in the notification. Meanwhile, the crackdown on smoky vehicles is expected to support Punjab’s broader efforts to address Lahore’s persistent air pollution and improve environmental conditions.
