The Lahore lawmakers have made a major move on Thursday towards reforming the archaic laws. They moved forward with the submission of the Christian Marriage Act Bill, 2026, in the Standing Committee on Minority Affairs of the Punjab Assembly. The private member bill was proposed by Falbus Christopher, who chairs the committee.
Major Reforms Target Age and Recognition Issues
The bill elevates the age limit for marriage to 18 for males and females from the previous ages of 16 and 13 years, respectively.
In addition, it makes it mandatory for both parties in the marriage to be Christians in order to qualify under this law. This new law will help marriages overcome many problems that might emerge in the future.
Moreover, the bill mandates that union councils and Nadra register Christian marriage certificates in the government computer system. This step has been warmly welcomed by all families because it means they can finally access their inheritance and all other privileges without having to go through red tape.
Lastly, the ban on conducting weddings after six o’clock has been scrapped off.
Expanded Rights Strengthen Community Ties
In addition, every pastor from any denomination whose church has been registered by the government. This ensures greater inclusion of members of different Christian churches. The bill clearly defines marriage as being between a man and a woman, which was not clear from the wording used in the Act of 1872.
