ISLAMABAD: The Punjab government has announced heavy fines for traffic violations. The government decided this in the Motor Vehicle Act, to strengthen road safety and control reckless driving.
New Penalties for Violations
Under the new regulations, vehicles causing air pollution or emitting smoke will be fined Rs. 5,000 for motorcycles, Rs. 10,000 for cars and jeeps, Rs. 15,000 for public service vehicles (PSVs), and Rs. 20,000 for heavy transport vehicles (HTVs).
Parking in no-parking zones now incurs penalties of Rs. 2,000 for motorcycles, Rs. 10,000 for cars and jeeps, Rs. 15,000 for PSVs, and Rs. 20,000 for HTVs. Similarly, throwing garbage from a moving vehicle will result in fines ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 20,000 depending on vehicle type.
Underage Driving and Mobile Use Penalized
The strictest penalties target underage driversโRs. 25,000 for motorcycles, Rs. 30,000 for cars and jeeps, Rs. 50,000 for PSVs, and Rs. 100,000 for HTVs. Using a mobile phone while driving will also invite fines between Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 20,000.
Driving without a seatbelt will cost Rs. 10,000 for cars, Rs. 15,000 for PSVs, and Rs. 20,000 for HTVs, while carrying more than two passengers on a motorcycle will attract a Rs. 5,000 fine.
Goal: Safer, Cleaner Roads
Punjab government officials said the heavy fines aim to promote responsible driving, reduce accidents, and tackle pollution. The new policy of the Punjab government has shocked the motorists in the province.
