A new feature introduced by X has sparked debate after revealing that the official Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) account is being operated from outside Pakistan. PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram publicly distanced the party’s information wing from the account, stating that those posting from the handle “are not in Pakistan.”
PTI and Imran Khan Accounts Show Foreign Locations
The update comes after X rolled out its “About this account” feature, which displays key information such as an account’s location, creation date, verification timeline, and app download details. According to TechCrunch, the feature exposed that PTI’s official X account is being run from the United States.
Meanwhile, the account of PTI founder Imran Khan showed that it was being operated from West Asia, though the exact country was not revealed.
Waqas Akram emphasized that the PTI information wing is not managing the official account, suggesting that party workers abroad are behind its operations.
Imran Khan Questioned Over Social Media Access
Despite the revelations, Imran Khan has repeatedly confirmed ownership of his social media accounts, including his X profile. The PTI founder—imprisoned since August 2023—was questioned in September by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) regarding who controls his online platforms.
Khan refused to disclose the names of those operating his accounts, saying: “If I tell, they will be kidnapped.” When asked how he communicates with the social media team, he explained that he simply passes messages to anyone who visits him in prison, who then relays them to the team.
The discovery of foreign-operated accounts has raised fresh questions about PTI’s digital communication structure, online messaging chain, and the party’s reliance on overseas workers for key social media operations.
