Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has requested National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq to issue production orders for nine party lawmakers it claims remain in detention. The party wants the members to attend parliamentary proceedings and ensure their constituencies retain representation in the National Assembly.
In a letter, PTI Chief Whip Amir Dogar urged the speaker to take immediate notice of the matter. Moreover, he requested the issuance of production orders under Rule 108 of the National Assembly’s Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business, 2007.
Nine Lawmakers Named in PTI Request
The lawmakers named in the request include Haji Imtiaz Ahmad Choudhry, Muhammad Jamal Ahsan Khan, Mian Ghous Muhammad, Sanaullah Khan Mastikhel and Dawar Khan Kundi. The remaining members are Junaid Akbar, Amjad Ali Khan, Fazal Muhammad Khan and Adil Khan Bazai.
Dogar stressed that the speaker should ensure detained members can participate in parliamentary proceedings regardless of their political affiliation. Consequently, PTI wants the National Assembly to address the matter and facilitate the lawmakers’ attendance during the ongoing session.
Families Approach Peshawar High Court
Meanwhile, the families of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and provincial assembly speaker Babar Saleem Swati have approached the Peshawar High Court. They have requested legal intervention to trace their relatives and establish their whereabouts.
Afridi’s brother, Muhammad Amir, filed a petition seeking directions for authorities to locate his brother and produce him before the court if he remains in custody. Separately, Swati’s cousin, Waqar Ahmad Khan, also approached the court to seek information about the speaker’s whereabouts.
The developments follow the imposition of emergency measures and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on October 11. PTI had alleged that authorities detained Afridi and other party leaders, while officials subsequently confirmed that the chief minister and some cabinet members were in preventive custody.
