PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has warned that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) long march will not be allowed to move beyond Attock into Punjab.
Speaking on a television programme, Kundi challenged PTI to proceed with its planned march, claiming the party did not have enough support to advance beyond Attock. He also questioned PTI’s ability to mobilise the large number of supporters it has claimed would participate.
The PTI convoy, led by KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, is currently moving towards Khairabad, which connects KP with Punjab. The chief minister is expected to announce the next phase of the march after reaching the area on October 8.
Kundi also raised security concerns surrounding the protest, particularly amid ongoing militant activity in KP. He questioned whether PTI had adequate screening arrangements to prevent individuals with malicious intentions from joining the march.
The governor said he had recently discussed the political situation and PTI’s protest with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. He maintained that dialogue remained an option, while warning that authorities would take necessary measures if the situation deteriorated.
Meanwhile, the federal government has urged PTI to abandon the march and return to negotiations. Recent talks between the government and opposition ended without an agreement, with disagreements over counterterrorism policy and access to jailed PTI founder Imran Khan.
