Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Omar Ayub Khan has urged authorities to restore access to social media sites in the country, citing the importance of free access to information. Addressing media persons in Islamabad, Khan condemned the ongoing restrictions on social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), which has been largely inaccessible in Pakistan since February 17 except through VPNs.
Former caretaker information minister Murtaza Solangi clarified that the interim government had no involvement in the shutdown of X in Pakistan. Khan criticized the government, labeling it as “fascist” for blocking various social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, and slowing down their speed, purportedly to restrict access to timely and accurate information.
Asserting that social media is crucial for Pakistan’s development, Khan demanded the immediate restoration of these platforms without any hindrance. He accused the government of blocking social media to prevent citizens from accessing accurate information.
Khan also denounced the alleged rigging in the 2024 general elections, claiming that PTI candidates were unfairly defeated. He criticized Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and the police for allegedly filing terror cases against PTI workers during recent protests, where over 100 party members were reportedly arrested.
Regarding the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Khan disclosed that a delegation had met with PTI founder Imran Khan, proposing an agreement for Pakistan’s betterment. However, Imran Khan insisted that any agreement must adhere to constitutional procedures, including holding the February 8 elections on schedule.
Khan accused the current government, led by Shehbaz Sharif, of lacking the capability to implement IMF reforms, expressing concern over potential misuse of IMF loans. He emphasized the importance of upholding constitutional principles and criticized any government actions that violate the Constitution.
