ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) submitted a new list of lawyers to the Adiala Jail administration on Tuesday. The party requested permission for a meeting with former prime minister Imran Khan, who has remained in custody since 2023.
Advocate Awais Younas Chaudhry sent the list to jail authorities. It includes PTI interim chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, Ali Zaman, Haider Majeed, Imran Khan Orakzai and Shamsa Kiyani. The party asked for the meeting to take place in line with Islamabad High Court orders.
The court allows weekly meetings for lawyers and family members every Tuesday. PTI said it followed these instructions while submitting the request.
Political context and parliamentary remarks
Barrister Gohar linked the request to recent political developments in parliament. He said better relations between the government and opposition could improve dialogue. He also referred to a handshake between Mehmood Khan Achakzai and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Meanwhile, Imran Khanโs sisters, including Aleema Khan, also planned a visit to Adiala Jail under court permission.
Protest attempt outside Adiala Jail
Aleema Khan earlier announced a protest outside the jail. However, the turnout remained low. Around 1,000 supporters appeared instead of the expected 10,000.
PTI leaders blamed the Tehreek-i-Tahaffuz-i-Ayeen-i-Pakistan alliance for the low turnout. The alliance rejected this claim.
Court proceedings and jail response
The Adiala Jail superintendent informed the Islamabad High Court about a dispute over a power of attorney in the Al Qadir Trust case. The superintendent said lawyers did not collect the document on time.
The court warned that it may proceed with available records if arguments are not presented at the next hearing.
Separately, Bushra Bibiโs daughter filed a complaint about alleged negligence and mistreatment in jail. She demanded action against responsible staff.
