ISLAMABAD: The PTI-backed independent candidates are leading on around 100 NA seats while PML-N candidates are advancing on 85 seats, according to the initial results of general elections.
However, PPP candidates are leading on about 45 seats of the National Assembly. As the results are premature, PML-N leaders are eyeing more NA seats till the finalization of the results.
Voting in Pakistan’s 2024 general elections concluded as scheduled at 5 pm on Thursday. Results began to trickle in as the seals were removed from the ballot boxes, gradually painting a picture of the potential victor.
The electoral landscape showcased a mix of fierce battles and landslide victories. As time passed, a series of surprising outcomes unfolded.
Initial and unofficial tallies suggest that independent candidates, many of whom were supported by PTI, secured wins primarily in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, with around 100 seats.
However, these results are based on a partial count from a limited number of polling stations, with a complete tally still pending.
PMLN bagged double the seats as PPP is advancing on only 45 NA seats till 8 am on Friday.
The vote count in 266 national constituencies paints an incomplete picture of the election landscape.
Initial reports indicated significant upsets for some prominent figures: Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari lost the NA-127 seat to PMLN’s Atta Tarar, JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman lost his NA-44 constituency in Dera Ismail Khan to Ali Amin Gandapur, and JI’s Sirajul Haq was defeated by an independent candidate in NA-6 Lower Dir.
PML-N’s Hanif Abbasi faced stiff competition from an independent candidate in Rawalpindi NA-56, while PPP’s Yousaf Raza Gilani was defeated by an independent candidate in Multan’s NA-148 constituency.
The flow of results to newsrooms nearly ceased by 2 am Friday, as election rules permit Returning Officers to halt result transmission after 2 am and resume at 10 am the following day.
