Prince William has revealed his passion for cinema, naming Christopher Nolan’s 2008 blockbuster The Dark Knight as one of the films that made the strongest impression on him.
The Prince of Wales discussed his favourite movies during a conversation with British filmmaker and interviewer Thomas Duke for his social media channel Stepping Through Film.
William described himself as “obsessed” with movies, although he admitted that finding enough time to watch them remains difficult.
“I love my film. I’m obsessed. I mean, frankly, we could talk for hours about film,” he said.
Prince William Praises Christopher Nolan’s Filmmaking
During the conversation, William expressed admiration for Nolan’s filmmaking and his ability to create complex, darker characters.
The prince also praised Nolan’s 2023 historical drama Oppenheimer, which he said he watched last summer.
However, when Duke asked which Nolan film had first made a lasting impression, William immediately selected The Dark Knight.
He said the movie successfully transformed Batman for a new generation while bringing greater intensity and a darker atmosphere to Gotham City.
Heath Ledger’s Joker Wins Special Praise
William particularly highlighted Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker, describing the late actor’s work as an “incredible performance.”
“I liked the dark edginess of it,” William said while reflecting on the film and Ledger’s performance.
Released in 2008, The Dark Knight was directed by Nolan, who co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Jonathan Nolan. The film followed 2005’s Batman Begins as the second instalment in Nolan’s Batman trilogy.
Christian Bale starred as Batman alongside Ledger, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Morgan Freeman.
The film became one of Nolan’s most prominent works, while Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker earned widespread acclaim and a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
