Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday urged Pakistan to embrace electric vehicles across the country. He spoke at a ceremony where the Interior Ministry handed over 15 eco-friendly electric vehicles to the Islamabad Capital Traffic Police. The prime minister highlighted how rising global oil prices and recent regional tensions make this switch urgent for saving precious foreign reserves.
PM stresses benefits of EVs for law enforcement
Shehbaz Sharif asked all law enforcement agencies and provinces to follow Islamabadโs example and introduce similar energy-saving initiatives. He praised the 15 battery-powered vehicles that run without petrol or oil. Another batch of electric vehicles will arrive soon, officials confirmed. The prime minister called the step significant because it will ease pressure on the countryโs foreign exchange reserves.
Each electric vehicle can travel 350 to 400 kilometres on a full charge. Fast charging takes 60 to 90 minutes, while normal charging requires 6 to 8 hours. These vehicles save up to Rs550,000 per month compared to petrol-run cars. Moreover, they recover their own procurement cost within 13 to 14 months. Islamabad Police Inspector General Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi briefed the prime minister about the project details, including special uniforms for the staff teams.
Government aims to expand green transport
Federal ministers, senior police officers, and other officials attended the event. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and his team received appreciation for launching this practical step toward cleaner mobility. The prime minister believes such moves will bring positive long-term effects on the national economy while reducing dependence on imported fuel.
Many observers see this as part of a broader push for sustainable transport in Pakistan. With fuel costs climbing due to global events, the government wants to promote environment-friendly options that cut expenses and protect the economy. Citizens and provinces now watch closely to see how quickly other departments and regions adopt electric vehicles in daily operations.
