On Sunday, President Asif Ali Zardari departed for Lisbon, Portugal, to offer his condolences following the death of Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, the 49th spiritual leader of the Ismaili community, renowned for his global development efforts.
A statement from the President’s House confirmed that President Zardari would meet His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan to extend his sympathies on the passing of Aga Khan IV. Additionally, the president will meet with his Portuguese counterpart, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
Aga Khan IV passed away on February 4 at the age of 88, surrounded by family in Lisbon. His private burial ceremony took place in Aswan, Egypt, on Sunday.
Following the unsealing of his father’s will, Prince Rahim al-Hussaini Aga Khan V was named the 50th spiritual leader of the Ismaili community.
A funeral ceremony for the late Aga Khan IV was held on Saturday at the Ismaili Centre in Lisbon, attended by over 300 guests, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, former Spanish King Juan Carlos I, and Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. Other dignitaries, community leaders, and family members, including Aga Khan University President Sulaiman Shahabuddin and Habib Bank Limited Chairman Sultan Ali Allan, were also present.
