Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Secretary General Nayyar Bukhari has said the party will provide constitutional advice if the federal government consults it over the possible imposition of governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Bukhari said governor’s rule could be considered on the governor’s recommendation if the provincial government failed to perform its constitutional responsibilities. His comments come amid growing tensions between the federal government and the PTI-led KP administration.
Centre Raises Governor’s Rule Option
Federal government ministers have recently discussed governor’s rule and an emergency in KP, citing the province’s security situation and disagreements with Chief Minister Sohail Afridi’s government.
KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, who belongs to the PPP, has also warned that the province cannot afford further political unrest amid continuing security concerns. He said governor’s rule is a constitutional option in extraordinary circumstances if conditions deteriorate further.
Bukhari described the law and order situation in KP as extremely serious. He questioned the absence of PTI leaders from funerals of security personnel killed in terrorist attacks and said the federal government should enforce the law to prevent violence.
PTI Plans October 4 Islamabad March
The dispute has intensified ahead of PTI’s planned march towards Islamabad on October 4. The party had postponed the protest from September 27 and continues to demand the release of its founder, Imran Khan. Chief Minister Afridi has maintained that the march will proceed despite warnings over governor’s rule.
Bukhari said political disputes should be addressed through dialogue. He maintained that peaceful protest is a constitutional right but rejected violence against state institutions.
He also confirmed that PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has been invited to an All Parties Conference convened by the Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Ayeen-e-Pakistan. The PPP’s central executive committee will decide whether the party participates.
