ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party has nominated Sarfaraz Bugti as its candidate for the post of chief minister of Balochistan.
Sarfaraz Bugti was elected to the Balochistan Assembly from PB-10 and he resigned as a member of the Senate three days ago after anticipating his nomination as chief minister.
Bugti was also part of the caretaker cabinet as the federal minister for interior but left the post to contest in the elections.
He has also served as the provincial interior minister in the previous government.
PPP is the largest party in the Balochistan Assembly with 11 seats, followed by Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz with 10 seats. PPP is leading the coalition government in Balochistan.
Balochistan Assembly will elect the new chief minister on Saturday.
Earlier, the Balochistan Assembly, in its inaugural session, elected unopposed Abdul Khaliq Achakzai of PML-N as speaker and Ghazala Gula of Pakistan People’s Party as Deputy Speaker of the House.
Later, the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the provincial assembly were sworn in.
Earlier, Members-elect of the Balochistan Assembly took oath.
Meanwhile, Quetta Presiding Officer Zumark Achakzai presided over the oath-taking ceremony for the fifty-six newly elected lawmakers of the Balochistan Assembly on Wednesday.
In his welcome address, Speaker Zumark Achakzai expressed optimism about the new assembly’s ability to collaborate for the province’s development, emphasizing the importance of collective effort in moving Balochistan forward.
The assembly staff ensured meticulous preparations for welcoming the incoming members, underscoring the significance of the inaugural session.
Interestingly, the Balochistan Assembly’s inaugural session coincided with the induction of newly-elected members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly, highlighting a synchronized political transition across provinces.
During the elections, a total of 5,026 polling stations were set up across Balochistan, with special attention given to 1,651 deemed most sensitive and 2,249 classified as sensitive, ensuring broad coverage and accessibility for voters.
To guarantee the smooth conduct of the electoral process, an extensive training program was organized for 51,379 polling officers and other staff members involved in the process.
