ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party has nominated Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari as its representative on the Judicial Commission of Pakistan, according to sources.
The development follows the resignation of senior PPP leader and lawyer Farooq H. Naek from the commission on October 7. Naek reportedly resigned citing personal reasons.
Sources said a formal notification confirming Bilawal’s appointment is expected to be issued soon.
Bilawal’s nomination would give him a position in the body responsible for playing a key role in appointments to Pakistan’s superior judiciary. The Judicial Commission comprises representatives from the judiciary, parliament, government and the legal profession.
The commission’s structure underwent significant changes following the 26th Constitutional Amendment. The amendment increased parliamentary representation and gave the commission a central role in appointing judges to the higher courts.
Naek had previously represented the PPP on the commission. Following his resignation, the party decided to nominate Bilawal to fill the vacant position.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz member Sheikh Aftab Ahmed has also reportedly resigned from the Judicial Commission.
Further nominations are expected as political parties move to fill vacant parliamentary positions on the commission.
Bilawal’s proposed appointment comes as the Judicial Commission continues its responsibilities under Pakistan’s revised constitutional framework.
