DISCOs Directed to Coordinate With Local Authorities and Complete Preparations
ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Energy (Power Division) has issued comprehensive directives to all Distribution Companies (DISCOs), the National Power Control Centre (NPCC), and the National Grid Company (NGC) to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during Muharram, particularly on the 9th and 10th of Muharram when Ashura processions and gatherings take place across the country.
Acting on the instructions of Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, the ministry directed all DISCOs to immediately coordinate with district administrations, management committees, and law enforcement agencies.
Authorities have instructed power companies to obtain complete lists of Majalis venues and procession routes from local administrations. Additionally, Chief Engineers (Operation) will oversee electricity continuity, while designated focal persons at the circle level will maintain real-time coordination with civil authorities and community representatives.
Maintenance and Emergency Response Plans Activated
Meanwhile, DISCOs have been ordered to complete maintenance work on power networks and distribution transformers serving Imam Bargahs and Majalis venues before the 7th of Muharram.
The ministry also instructed companies to remove hanging wires and address potential electrical hazards along procession routes to ensure public safety. Emergency teams equipped with transformers, tools, vehicles, and essential materials will remain on standby throughout the observance period.
Regional and field stores will operate on an emergency basis to guarantee the immediate availability of required equipment and supplies.
Control Rooms and Monitoring System to Operate Round the Clock
Furthermore, authorities will establish 24-hour control rooms at multiple administrative levels to monitor operations during Muharram. Operational staff, including managers and assistant managers, will remain present in their offices, especially on Ashura.
The National Grid Company has also been directed to ensure smooth power transmission according to NPCC allocations, while DISCOs must prepare contingency plans to prevent forced load shedding.
The ministry urged all stakeholders to work closely together to ensure a safe, dignified, and uninterrupted observance of Muharram across Pakistan.
