LISBON: The Portuguese administration was extremely pleased with the ceasefire agreement made between the United States and Iran. It also welcomed the resumption of marine movement across the Strait of Hormuz. Portugal has expressed appreciation to Pakistan for making an essential contribution to the mediation exercise.
The officials noted that the two-week ceasefire was “a decisive first step towards achieving a lasting and sustainable diplomatic resolution.” They also reiterated Portugal’s total support for the diplomatic process. The same message was conveyed during recent engagements at the high level.
Strong Support for Peace Process
Additionally, over the last two days, the Portuguese administration conducted consultations with the foreign affairs ministers of Pakistan and Egypt. In these interactions, Portugal stressed the significance of consistent diplomacy. The goal is to capitalize on the existing truce to avoid the recurrence of hostilities in the region.
Pakistan’s Role Gains International Recognition
Moreover, the positive attitude of the Portuguese side can be viewed as another instance of increasing recognition of Pakistan’s diplomatic skills by the world community. As the trusted negotiator between Washington and Tehran, Islamabad managed to create circumstances that led to the announcement of a ceasefire on April 7.
The Portuguese believe that such an agreement will bring some relief to the global energy markets. It will also reduce the risk of any serious military clash in the region. Hopefully, the coming negotiations planned in Islamabad on April 10 will yield more lasting results.
This trend aligns with official statements issued recently by a number of European countries regarding de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
