Pope Leo XIV has pledged to gradually resume his duties after undergoing surgery for lung cancer, making his first public appearance since the operation. The 71-year-old pontiff addressed thousands of worshippers in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, thanking people worldwide for their prayers and support.
The pope appeared at a window of the Apostolic Palace a day after leaving Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. Smiling and speaking clearly, he reassured the crowd that he would slowly return to his regular responsibilities while continuing his recovery.
Pope Thanks Supporters During First Public Appearance
During his address, Pope Leo expressed gratitude to everyone who had prayed for him during his hospital stay. He said the experience had brought him closer to people living with illness and other medical difficulties.
He also thanked the doctors, nurses and medical staff who supported his treatment and recovery. Meanwhile, thousands of worshippers welcomed his appearance with applause and cheers, expressing relief at seeing him return to his weekly public prayer.
The pontiff underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove the lower lobe of his right lung after doctors diagnosed lung adenocarcinoma, a common form of lung cancer. Medical assessments indicated that his recovery was progressing well enough for him to leave hospital on Saturday.
Vatican Reviews Pope’s Upcoming Schedule
Although Pope Leo has begun resuming some activities, the Vatican is proceeding cautiously with his public schedule. Officials cancelled other public engagements until at least Wednesday while assessing his recovery.
Doctors have reported encouraging progress and said the pope can perform normal daily activities independently. However, further test results will help determine whether he requires additional treatment.
The pontiff is also scheduled to visit Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from November 6 to 17. His medical team has indicated that the trip remains possible, although officials may adjust his schedule according to his recovery.
Pope Leo’s return has reassured many Catholics worldwide. Nevertheless, the Vatican will continue monitoring his condition as he gradually resumes leadership duties and prepares for upcoming international commitments.
