Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has declared that he would “welcome” Prime Minister Imran Khan as the next opposition leader after the victory of the no-confidence vote against the latter in the National Assembly.
In a statement, Zardari expressed the hope that as an opposition leader, the PTI head, plays a role in democracy.
“After Mian Shahbaz Sharif is elected Prime Minister, Imran Khan will be the Leader of the Opposition. I shall welcome Imran Khan to become the leader of opposition in National Assembly,” it stated.
Zardari’s comments came after the Supreme Court on Thursday reinstated the National Assembly and deemed the judgement of the National Assembly deputy speaker made on April 3 null and unconstitutional. The supreme court also ruled the dissolution of the House unconstitutional and against the Constitution.
“It is stated that the [no-confidence] Resolution [against the prime minister] was pending and subsisting at all times and continues to thus be pending and subsisting,” said the SC’s brief order.
Many workers and attorneys belonging to opposition parties who had assembled outside the Supreme Court building on Constitution Avenue were seen cheering after the pronouncement of the brief verdict by the five-member SC bench. All the five judges of the bigger bench unanimously voted 5-0 against the deputy speaker’s verdict.
