WASHINGTON: The first Muslim woman elected to Congress, Ilhan Omar, arrived in Islamabad early Wednesday for four days of official business.
Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan Omar were elected in 2018 and are the first Muslim women in Congress.
Somali-born and former refugee Ilhan Omar is also the first African-born person to serve in Congress as a naturalised citizen. As a candidate in the general election, she received a record-breaking 78.0 percent of the votes cast. An old book belonging to her grandpa was used as an oath of office.
Ms. Omar, who landed in Pakistan early on Wednesday morning, will be here till the 24th of April. Lahore and Azad Kashmir are among the places she plans to visit, and she will also meet with Pakistan’s new government.
