In a recent appearance on a tv show, Advisor to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah leveled serious allegations against former ISI chief Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed, accusing him of using his position for personal and political advantage.
Sanaullah claimed that Hameed abused his authority for actions ranging from coercion to interference in state affairs. He specifically accused Hameed’s brother, Najaf, of partnering with a housing society and attempting to seize control of it. Sanaullah alleged that Hameed threatened the society’s other owner, had him arrested under terrorism charges, and referred him to the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) as a terrorist.
Following complaints, the Ministry of Defence was reportedly directed by former Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa to investigate the matter, Sanaullah added.
The Prime Minister’s adviser also accused Hameed of playing a role in managing the audio leaks from the Prime Minister’s Office during both the previous and current PDM governments. He claimed that a person stationed in the Prime Minister’s House had been leaking recordings of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, and others to Faiz Hameed for an extended period.
Sanaullah alleged that Hameed had made statements asserting the intelligence agency’s authority to decide who should be respected or not, implying a stronghold over political matters.
Additionally, Rana Sanaullah claimed that Faiz Hameed had orchestrated a “heroin case” against him, allegedly manipulated by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) to implicate him. Sanaullah revealed that the case had been brought to the attention of then-Army Chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa.
Sanaullah also accused former Prime Minister Imran Khan of making the army chief’s appointment and extension controversial, particularly when Khan proposed a six-month extension for General Bajwa. The former minister claimed that Khan later tried to appoint his preferred individual for the post of army chief and led a violent long march to block the appointment. Rana Sanaullah alleged that this march was orchestrated by Faiz Hameed, with the violent events of May 9 being a culmination of Hameed’s influence.
Furthermore, Sanaullah disclosed that evidence was being gathered on Hameed’s activities during this time.
In a related development, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced that proceedings against Faiz Hameed under the Pakistan Army Act began on August 12, 2024, through a Field General Court Martial. Hameed has now been formally charged with political involvement, violations of the Official Secrets Act, compromising state security, misuse of authority, and causing harm to individuals. A separate investigation is also underway into his alleged role in violent incidents, including those linked to the unrest of May 9.
