Vladimir Putin stated on Tuesday that Russia is working hard to “normalise” the situation in Afghanistan, citing Moscow’s responsibility in the region.
While speaking with Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon, Putin stated, “We are doing everything to normalise the situation (in Afghanistan) and we are trying to create connections with the political forces who manage the situation.”
However, he went on to say in remarks carried by the Russian media that their starting point was that ethnic groups in Afghanistan should have full participation in administering the nation.
“Here, you’re the expert… in this zone where we all have a duty to keep the situation calm and pose no danger to anybody,” he informed Rakhmon.
Since the beginning of Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine on February 24, Putin has made his first travel overseas.
For Russia, Tajikistan is one of its most important partners in the area.
For over 1,200 kilometres, Tajik soldiers battle Afghan traffickers along the country’s Afghanistan border.
Some people worry that Tajikistan, the poorest of the former Soviet governments, might become unstable because of the Taliban regaining control in Afghanistan in August.
Russia continues to be an important source of economic support for the nation.
