PTI Withdraws Petition from Supreme Court, Opts for ‘People’s Court’ Amidst Symbol Controversy

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has withdrawn its petition from the Supreme Court seeking a level playing field in the upcoming general elections.

During the hearing, counsel Latif Khosa announced the party’s decision to withdraw the application, stating that they would prefer to seek justice in the court of 250 million people for the sake of democracy.

The three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, heard the case. Khosa expressed dissatisfaction, claiming that the court’s previous judgment deprived the PTI of 230 seats, and candidates were assigned symbols like glass, eggplant, and bowl, causing humiliation.

CJP Isa clarified that whether the PTI wanted to accept the court’s decision was their choice, emphasizing that judges should not be blamed for the verdict. Khosa criticized the court, stating that it snatched the field from the PTI and insulted the party, leading to the decision to contest elections as independent candidates.

CJP Isa reminded Khosa that the court repeatedly asked for proof of intra-party elections, emphasizing that the court’s role is to ensure elections are conducted according to the law.

He asserted that if there were objections to other political parties, they should submit a petition, and if there were issues with the law, it could be changed.

Khosa argued that the court’s decision would destroy democracy, to which CJP Isa responded that the court’s job is to pronounce orders, not become the government. The Supreme Court disposed of the PTI’s petition as withdrawn, marking a significant development in the ongoing legal challenges faced by the party.
