Amid mounting speculations surrounding internal discord within Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party’s leadership has reportedly resorted to a solemn oath on the Holy Quran to quell infighting and prevent the disclosure of decisions made within its core and political apex committees.
This development comes amidst directives issued by the party’s top echelon, instructing members to abstain from publicly airing opinions on messages from PTI’s chief and from engaging in disputes amongst party leaders.
The rifts within PTI escalated when Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, the party chairman, relayed messages from the incarcerated PTI founder to members such as Omar Ayub Khan and Shibli Faraz.
In an attempt to alleviate tensions, these leaders took an oath on the Holy Quran. However, doubts lingered regarding the effectiveness of this measure, with Gohar expressing skepticism that it would prevent the leakage of crucial discussions among party leaders.
Addressing a PTI gathering via video link, Gohar underscored the imperative for party leaders to assess the situation following the imprisonment of the party founder, Imran Khan, and emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline by refraining from divulging pivotal party decisions to the public.
Additionally, he urged authorities to permit a medical examination of Bushra Bibi, the former first lady, at Shaukat Khanum Hospital to ascertain the veracity of allegations regarding the administration of a “poisonous substance” during her detention.
Gohar also criticized the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), accusing it of failing to uphold its constitutional duties and alleging that PTI’s victories in the 2024 nationwide polls were being overturned.
Responding to criticisms from Shehryar Afridi, who expressed discontent with the top leadership’s decisions, Gohar reaffirmed Afridi’s status as a respected leader within PTI and encouraged him to address concerns through the appropriate party channels.
Regarding the return of politicians who had announced their departure from PTI, Gohar asserted that decisions would be made by the party founder post his release from jail.
The PTI chairman’s statements come in the wake of Afridi’s recent allegations, where he referred to certain individuals within the party as “hypocrites” and “snakes,” asserting that betrayals would not be tolerated.
The internal conflicts within PTI were further highlighted by Afridi’s failed bid for a Senator’s seat, leading to a public spat between party members on social media platforms.
Despite these challenges, PTI’s leadership appears intent on addressing internal divisions and maintaining cohesion within the party.
