PTI Condemns Khawaja Asif for Suggesting Anti-Terror Attacks in Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has launched a scathing critique against Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, following his reported remarks hinting at potential cross-border anti-terror operations into Afghanistan. This development has sparked significant controversy and drawn strong reactions from opposition leaders and within political circles in Pakistan.

During an emergency meeting in the National Assembly, members of the united opposition vehemently criticized Asif’s statements, emphasizing the need for Pakistan to refrain from interfering in the affairs of neighboring countries, particularly Afghanistan. Former NA Speaker Asad Qaiser and other senior opposition figures condemned the rhetoric, warning that such actions could strain Pakistan’s relationships with Afghanistan and destabilize regional peace.

The opposition’s concerns were articulated against the backdrop of Asif’s interview with a US media outlet, where he ruled out negotiations with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and underscored Pakistan’s resolve to enhance border security against terrorism and illegal activities. However, the suggestion of potential military actions across the border has sparked fears of escalation and regional instability.

Omar Ayub, Leader of the Opposition in the NA, underscored the complexities of Afghanistan’s geostrategic importance and criticized the government’s selective approach towards neighboring countries, contrasting it with the lack of similar remarks regarding India. He highlighted the potential economic repercussions and emphasized the need for adherence to constitutional norms in fostering a stable investment climate.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar and leader Zartaj Gul echoed these sentiments, condemning Asif’s comments as irresponsible and detrimental to Pakistan’s international image. They stressed the importance of parliamentary oversight and criticized the government’s unilateral approach in matters of national security and foreign relations.

In response to heightened security concerns, Asif announced stringent measures to enforce international laws at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, aiming to curb militant activities and smuggling. The government’s stance underscores its commitment to bolstering national security amidst rising cross-border attacks and security challenges emanating from Afghanistan.

As the political discourse intensifies, Pakistan faces pivotal decisions regarding its regional strategy and internal security policies, with ongoing implications for diplomatic relations and regional stability.
