PTI Backs Fazlur Rehman on Constitutional Amendments After Imran Khan’s Adiala Meeting

PTI

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan disclosed on Saturday that former Prime Minister Imran Khan praised Maulana Fazlur Rehman for his firm stance in defending judicial independence, even under challenging circumstances.

During a press conference at K-P House in Islamabad, Barrister Gohar emphasized the need to respect Imran Khan’s rights, demanding humane treatment for the PTI leader.

Gohar, who recently had a 45-minute meeting with Khan at Adiala Jail, revealed details about the harsh conditions under which the former prime minister is being held. He stated that Khan had been kept in isolation without electricity for five consecutive days, a situation that Gohar described as a violation of Khan’s human and constitutional rights.

Furthermore, Khan has been deprived of access to television and newspapers for two weeks, leaving him uninformed about recent political and constitutional developments. “We briefed him on the latest happenings, particularly regarding constitutional amendments,” Gohar said, adding that the isolation was taking a toll on Khan’s awareness of national issues.

Addressing Khan’s personal concerns, Gohar noted that the former prime minister expressed deep sorrow over the arrest of his sisters but remained resolute, emphasizing that both he and his family were prepared to make further sacrifices for the greater good. Despite his difficult circumstances, Khan made a strong appeal to the nation, urging the public to maintain peace.

The meeting at Adiala Jail included five senior PTI leaders who informed Imran Khan about the progress made on constitutional amendments.

According to Gohar, Khan received the information with a positive mindset and particularly praised Maulana Fazlur Rehman for his steadfast commitment to protecting judicial independence. Khan’s praise for Rehman signaled a shift in PTI’s approach toward recent amendments.

The PTI delegation, including Barrister Gohar, was initially delayed in entering Adiala Jail due to resistance from prison authorities.

However, after receiving security clearance and following Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s intervention, they were eventually permitted to meet with Khan. Gohar shared that Maulana’s involvement was instrumental in granting them access to the PTI chairman.

In a related development, PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram criticized the prison administration for not allowing lawyer Salman Akram Raja to meet with Khan, although other leaders, including Gohar, Ali Zafar, and Asad Qaiser, were granted permission.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari announced, after a meeting with Maulana Fazlur Rehman, that the PPP and JUI-F had reached complete consensus on the proposed constitutional amendments.

Bilawal emphasized the shared commitment to judicial reforms between both parties, noting that the amendment draft was as much the product of Maulana’s work as it was the PPP’s.

Bilawal further encouraged PTI to support the amendment draft if they had any reservations about the version presented by the PPP, saying, “We have done all we can. Now, it’s up to PTI to accept Maulana’s version.” He also expressed hope that Maulana Fazlur Rehman would personally present the draft in parliament.
