Protests Erupt in Kashmir Over Reservation Policy Amendments

Kashmir

Widespread protests have erupted in Kashmir following controversial amendments to the region’s reservation policy.

Demonstrators gathered outside the residence of National Conference leader Omar Abdullah in Srinagar to voice their discontent with the changes introduced by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s administration.

The amendments to the 2005 Reservation Policy include a significant reduction in general category quotas, which predominantly affect the general category population, making up 69 percent of the region.

Meanwhile, tribal category reservations have been increased to 20 percent. These changes have sparked widespread discontent, with critics arguing that they disproportionately impact the majority population.

Prominent political figures, including National Conference MP Rohullah Mehdi, Altaja Mufti, and Sheikh Khurshi, brother of Engineer Rashid, have lent their voices to the protests.

Speaking at the demonstrations, leaders emphasized the need for equitable policies that reflect the region’s social dynamics.

Protesters expressed concerns about the lack of consultation before implementing the changes, arguing that the amendments undermine the rights of the general category population and risk creating deeper divides.

The National Conference, which had previously pledged reservation policy reforms in its electoral manifesto, is also facing criticism.

Protesters accused the party of failing to fulfill its promises, further fueling the controversy surrounding the amendments.

Beyond the immediate issue of reservation policy, the protests have reignited debates on broader topics, including regional autonomy, youth rights, and the restoration of Kashmir’s special status.

Political leaders at the demonstrations called for the administration to engage in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders and revisit the policy changes to ensure fairness and inclusivity.

As tensions rise, the Lieutenant Governor’s administration faces mounting pressure to address public grievances and reassess the reservation policy to prevent further unrest in the region.
