President Arif Alvi to retain office despite his term officially ends: Law Minister

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Law Azam Nazir Tarar announced that President Arif Alvi will retain his position despite his term ending in September. Tarar informed the media that in accordance with the constitutional mandate, the president’s office must not remain vacant. This is in accordance with the 18th Amendment in the Constitution.

After the completion of constituency delimitation based on the new census, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) needs to determine the election timeline. In the meantime, President Alvi will continue to hold the presidential office until the new administration assumes responsibility.

Tarar further explained that the parliament and provincial assemblies constitute the electoral college for the president. Hence, the general elections will lead to the establishment of a new government, which will subsequently choose a new president.

With the CCI granting approval for the 2023 census, the ECP is obligated to carry out updated delimitations. Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah suggested that as a result, the elections might be postponed until March of the following year.

Following the unanimous approval of the 2023 census, the ECP is now responsible for arranging the forthcoming elections. The elections, originally set for October or November, will take place using the recently collected digital census data.
