JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman stated on Friday that while his party supports the establishment of a constitutional court, he perceives the government’s intentions regarding the proposed constitutional amendment as suspect.
“We agree on forming a constitutional court, but we see ill intentions behind it. The government is attempting to use this court to undermine the opposition for their own benefit,” he expressed during a press conference in Multan.
The JUI-F has recently gained attention in Pakistan’s political landscape as it has kept the government on edge concerning a contentious constitutional amendment vote.
Media reports indicate multiple drafts of the proposed legislation emerged after the JUI-F raised concerns. The government made several visits to Fazl’s residence over the weekend, resulting in delays in sessions for both houses of Parliament.
As the day drew to a close, the government managed to bring its former ally into Parliament, leading to a discussion in a special committee. One of Fazl’s suggestions was to postpone the bill’s introduction until Monday. However, this did not materialize the following day due to the government’s inability to persuade the party.
Kamran Murtaza, Fazl’s advisor on legal matters, recently shared his objections regarding amendments to Articles 8 (Fundamental Rights) and 199 (Jurisdiction of High Court), arguing that these changes could infringe upon fundamental rights and undermine judicial authority.
