ISLAMABAD: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad granted post-arrest bail to 56 workers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) who were detained during protests on November 26.
Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain announced the decision, allowing the accused to be released after submitting a surety bond of Rs5,000 each.
The workers were arrested under various charges registered at the Tarnol and Kohsar police stations during protests following PTI chief Imran Khan’s “final call” to demand the release of party members and the restoration of democracy.
Thousands of PTI supporters marched toward Islamabad on November 24, overcoming roadblocks and internet disruptions to reach the capital. However, the protests turned violent, resulting in the deaths of at least six people, including a police officer and three Rangers officials. On November 26, demonstrators entered Islamabad and attempted to breach the Red Zone.
The protest was eventually called off, marking the third time the party ended its demonstration after reaching its destination. Reports indicated that PTI’s top leadership expressed disappointment over the low turnout from Punjab during the march.
Last month, the Islamabad High Court approved the bail of more than 120 PTI supporters arrested during the protests. However, in January, 81 PTI workers were re-arrested outside the judicial complex immediately after being granted bail in connection with another protest at D-Chowk.
