RAWALPINDI: The internal rifts within the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership have deepened with senior leader Sher Afzal Marwat announcing his decision to distance himself from working with other senior party members.
Marwat, speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, expressed his refusal to collaborate with Shibli Faraz and Omar Ayub, alleging that they hindered his attempts to meet PTI founder Imran Khan in prison.
Marwat’s stance follows the recent revocation of his nomination for the post of National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman, with Sheikh Waqas Akram being named as his replacement. PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub and Senator Shibli Faraz reportedly orchestrated the decision to withdraw Marwat’s name during a political committee meeting.
Expressing his frustration, Marwat criticized the party’s leadership for retracting his nomination for the PAC chairman post, attributing it to objections raised by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). He lamented feeling targeted since the February 8 elections and claimed to have informed the party founder about it.
Despite his disillusionment with the party leadership, Marwat affirmed his loyalty to PTI’s ideals and pledged to return only when summoned by Imran Khan himself. He also highlighted his dissatisfaction with being de-notified from the political committee, a position he claimed to have been appointed to directly by Imran Khan.
Marwat’s discontent underscores broader tensions within PTI, as evidenced by previous objections raised against his prospective candidacy from Peshawar and online disputes with party members like Salman Ahmad. As he advocates for protests to assert the party’s mandate and the freedom of its founder, Marwat’s outspokenness reflects a growing sense of disillusionment and discord within PTI’s ranks.
