FIA Prosecutor Criticizes PTI Spokespersons Over Imran’s Bail Speculations

PTI Spokespersons

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) resumed hearings on the bail application of the PTI founder in the Toshakhana-2 case. Justice Mian Gul Hasan Aurangzeb presided over the proceedings, with both FIA Prosecutor Zulfiqar Abbas Naqvi and Barrister Salman Safdar, the defense counsel, presenting their arguments.

During the session, Justice Aurangzeb cautioned the FIA prosecutor against commenting on the case in the media, stating, “Leave the media alone and exempt yourself from them.”

This directive followed the prosecutor’s assertion that media outlets had prematurely reported that bail would be granted. Justice Aurangzeb underscored the need for maintaining decorum and avoiding public speculation.

The court sought clarification regarding the receipts mentioned in the case, specifically whether they were issued in the name of Bushra Bibi or the PTI founder. Barrister Salman Safdar clarified that the receipts cited in the prosecution’s challan were issued in Bushra Bibi’s name.

Defense’s Position

The defense raised serious concerns about the delays and procedural issues surrounding the case. Barrister Salman Safdar pointed out a 3.5-year delay in registering the case and questioned the credibility of the witnesses, highlighting that witnesses Sohaib Abbasi and Inamullah Shah were designated without taking an oath.

He argued that multiple investigative agencies, including NAB, FIA, Police, and the Election Commission, were handling aspects of the Toshakhana case, creating procedural redundancy. Additionally, he noted that the Kohsar Police Station had also registered a case regarding a fake Toshakhana receipt, adding to the complexity of the matter.

Prosecution’s Stance

The FIA prosecutor, Umair Majeed Malik, assured the court that the valuation of the jewelry set referenced in the case would be substantiated with evidence.

However, Justice Aurangzeb remarked that media sensationalism often influenced narratives, quipping, “If the media does not spread sensationalism, how will they conduct their business?”

Co-Accused Update

The court was informed that Bushra Bibi, a co-accused in the case, is currently on interim bail. Her case is being heard by Judge Afzal Majuka, and Barrister Salman Safdar expressed optimism that a verdict in her case would soon be announced.

Justice Aurangzeb also addressed speculation about his health, dismissing rumors and affirming that he was actively presiding over the proceedings despite such reports. The case continues to draw attention, reflecting the high stakes and contentious nature of the Toshakhana case proceedings.
