ECP Unveils Diverse Lineup: 17,816 Candidates to Contest in Pakistan’s General Elections

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially disclosed the extensive list of candidates for the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8, 2024.

A substantial total of 17,816 candidates have entered the electoral arena, showcasing a diverse mix that notably includes 4 transgender individuals and a significant representation of women.

Breaking down the candidate composition, the 266 constituencies of the National Assembly witness the participation of 1,780 male and 93 female candidates from various political parties. Additionally, a noteworthy 3,027 independent candidates have entered the fray, comprising 2,219 men, 219 women, and 2 transgender individuals.

The comprehensive count of candidates vying for the general seats of the National Assembly stands at 5,121. Within this group, 4,806 are men, 312 are women, and 2 are transgender individuals, highlighting a diverse representation in the democratic process.

Turning attention to the provincial assemblies, the data reveals that 6,710 candidates are competing for seats in the Punjab Assembly, with 2,878 candidates for the Sindh Assembly, 1,834 candidates (including 2 transgenders) for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, and 1,273 candidates for the Balochistan Assembly.

In summary, the current report from the Commission discloses a total of 12,695 candidates engaging in the electoral competition across the four provincial assemblies.

When considering the National Assembly, the grand total reaches 17,816 candidates contending for general seats in both the national and provincial assemblies. The diverse range of candidates reflects an active and dynamic political landscape as the country approaches general elections.
